I am cheating on this one. There were all these tourist around me throwing coins in the water and there was heavy rippling on the water. I replaced the water part of the image with the sky image flipped. It took a lot of work but it turned out pretty well.

Wilson Arch is located about an hour south of Moab, Utah. It is one of the most accessible arches in the area. The parking lot is only a short distance from it. the climb is easy and then one can clamber all around it, This was shot with multiple images due to the intensity of [...]

I was walking through this area outside of town when I saw this “tractor graveyard”. This one caught my eye since it looked like it was fighting a losing battle to the local plant life. The light was wonderful, spotlighting the subject. It was shot on a tripod…..steadying the camera while I fought the gnats [...]

This was shot outside of Decorah Iowa. There were 7 exposures combined to pull the sun and foreground together.

This amazing cloud hung over the mountain at sunrise. It sprayed the valley with light for very short periods of time. A very easy time to gawk and forget about shooting images.

This barn draws photographers like moths to a flame. At dawn, it was almost a spiritual experience. This image was a composite of multiple exposures due to the broad variance in light between the sky and the foreground.

When I shot the ranch, our party was permitted to stay in one of the guest houses on the site. This the place that property owners can stay when their houses are being built or where their guests can stay. Did I say theyview out any window is pretty amazing? This was an impossible shot. [...]

As I was shooting various locations on the ranch, these two guys came over to check me out. They were very standoffish until I explained to them that I had come all the way from Chicago to make images of their estate. Once I had explained the workings of my digital camera, they became very [...]

This road will lead to Federal land at the SW edge of the Maytag Mountain Ranch. The Sangre de Cristo range is laced with horse trails. This was a very difficult shot to take. The light was harsh and the wind was blowing a steady 30 mph. I had to shot between gusts and then [...]

This gift appeared the second morning in the UP. The shore went from dark to yellow fire in under 5 minutes.

We found this pond and spent a hour or so shooting it. The light changed in intensity constantly and the fog burned off the water. Places that we shot 20 minutes earlier were now brand new.

We visited about 5-6 waterfalls on this trip to the UP. They ranged in height from 6-8 inches to about 150 feet. I have never been good at capturing the whole falls; much better at smaller pieces. I was attracted to the10:00 light; it was very warm.

This series was shot in the part of Michigan that borders Lake Superior….the “UP”. This image was shot on our way to scouting a couple of different lakes. This is a composite of two shots; the light was hard to find.

This HDR shot was made in southern Wisconsin at a farm that had been abandoned and boarded up…..toys were still in the front yard. Shades of the Grapes of Wrath.

This slot canyon was about an hour’s drive from Escalante, Utah. I was all the way back inside and shot towards the light. I had to use about 8 exposures to fill in the variance in light.

The Tribe owns and runs Antelope Canyon. This is the son of the family that runs the concession here, The music sounded wonderful, wafting through the orange shapes and shadows.

So I have a good imagination! Another shot from Antelope Canyon. We shot there through the noon period so the light was amazing.

Light never ceases to amaze me. It travels across a monochrome environment and brings color and texture in unexpected places. It can make a scruffy twig look like a piece of art.

This image was shot at the Devil’s Garden which is about 15-20 miles south of Escalante, Utah. It is filled with whimsical sandstone formations that are like a Rorschach test for photographers. What made this shot so special for me was how the light reflected off the rock and lit up adjacent areas.

This image was shot on the east side of Capitol Reef, on the road going south to the Water Pocket Fold. The light was so severe that I had to take two images to make a composite. This is one of the least-visited national parks and one of the most facinating.

This is the 4th time that I have tried to capture the beauty of a slot canyon. I think that I am finally getting it! This image consists of 11 exposures that were combined with a software called Photomatix,
