I decided to try this in HDR, I did not like the blotchy results. I ended up combining the HDR output with a filtered version of one of the originals. The effect is much more pleasing.

Last weekend I shot at the Botanic Garden for 3 days in a row. This is another HDR rendition. I am finally finding that Photomatix is becoming my friend.

Last week I went up to the Garden to patrol for some good dawn shots. It was cold and overcast. The best I could do was catch this road to the east with a glimmer of dawn. What looks like headlights is my headlamp illuminating the snow. God, it was cold!

I loved the color of this one and how the droplets of moisture stuck to the blossom. I shot this at a mid aperture and had to wait for the fans to stop running to get rid of movement in the plant.

This was shot the same day at the Garden. These white moth orchids were everywhere. It was frustrating to try and frame a group and keep the background clean. Also the walkway was very narrow and I had to keep moving for people passing by. This is a composite of two images. The lighting from [...]

I had a bad case of shutter finger today. There was no snow on the ground, the shore was covered with ice crud from the lake and it looked like it was getting overcast. I decided to go up to the Botanic Garden and shoot in the greenhouse. This bloom was the first thing that [...]

I went up to the Garden and was expecting heavy fog at dawn. The only thing foggy was my breath as I slogged through the heavy wet snow, I only ended up taking 5 exposures for all that work!

This is Curt Pradelt. He lives in Tucson. Curt still is not really sure if digital has surpassed film.

A night shot at the Garden. I don’t know what possessed me but I started slowing down the exposure and moving the camera. These turned out far better than most of my attempts.

I am glad that the little person in front of the camera is in shadow. I don’t know if it is a boy or girl, black or white, Jewish or Buddhist, whether they will grow up to be gay or straight. I do know I see a child in wonder of the majesty of a [...]

Shot the same frosty morning as the leaf image. It was very hard to isolate the background so that the bud remained the main object. I was also surprised how few buds were in somewhat pristine condition.

The first white frost of autumn creates a visual candy store for a photographer. I think I went through 3 memory chips in the course of 2 hours. i tried to follow the line of new sunlight to catch the illuminated crystals before they were melted.

This is the view at Christmas when entering the Chicago Botanic Garden. I remember jumping to the side a few times so I would not get hit by a car.
